This is the story of the evolution of a small fishing village into a busy port and then a seaside resort. It is also incidentally, the story of how farmland owned by the Duchy of Norfolk was turned into a town and its management moved over a long period from the Duchy to Littlehampton Urban District Council, with the Duchy selling its last holdings in 1940.
Much of the detail has been gleaned from contemporary newspapers. The text is intended to provide a readable account which puts events into context with each other. It also aims to shed light in particular on the evolution of entertainment in the town and holiday accommodation, which important points appear to have been neglected in other work.
